Why Hire Mike Tonsing

Legal Experience and Background

Mike Tonsing represents existing and emerging companies in a broad range of business matters. He also represents individuals. He has over 35 years of legal experience, during which he has maintained an active role in the community as an attorney, speaker, writer, teacher and entrepreneur.

Before founding the Tonsing Lawfirm, Mike worked for the U.S. Department of Justice, the biggest law firm in the country, serving in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco. Earlier, he was chosen to be one of only ten administrative law judges for the San Francisco Public Employment Relations Board, California’s sole statewide public sector labor board. He also served as a Supreme Court Fellow, assisting the Court’s then Chief Justice, the Honorable Warren E. Burger. During his time at the Court, he was honored to receive the Justice Tom C. Clark Award as the Supreme Court Fellow of the year.

In addition to his government service, and his current sole practice, Mike has worked at a large private firm with offices nationwide as well as at small firms of three to six lawyers. He is currently “Of Counsel” to a moderate sized San Francisco firm, providing them with trial and appellate practice assistance. He has represented both individual entrepreneurs and large Fortune 500 companies. He has represented individuals and families, as well. He can counsel on transactional matters, assist individuals and companies with employment issues, help create strategies for growth, and can represent either plaintiffs or defendants in federal or state lawsuits.

Mike is consistently “AV-rated” by Martindale-Hubbell, their highest lawyer distinction. (Martindale ratings are based on peer review.) He also enjoys a rating of “Superb” from Avvo, the country’s largest online lawyer rating service.

Philosophy and Legal Outlook

Mike believes in being well prepared and doing his homework. He especially welcomes the opportunity to help build and protect businesses and watch them prosper. He believes in trying to be a “deal maker” lawyer rather than a “deal breaker” lawyer, finding workable solutions for clients, within the law and the bounds of ethics.

Throughout his career, Mike has paid attention to what works and what doesn’t. He believes an attorney should have a mature perspective, a bit of humility, and a sense of humor. He hopes he has picked up these traits along the way since beginning practice in 1976. He also believes that lawyers should practice law with civility – because it is the right way to practice law and also because that approach is more likely to lead to cost-effective solutions for his clients in the long run.
